Carp (Cyprinus Carpio)

The most widespread sweetwater fish of the world. In our region it can grow up to 30-35 kg’s and a length of 1 meter.
The carp are divided, according to their scales, into scaled, mirror, sidelined and so called skin carps, which all have several varieties.
They were originaly found in shallow lakes, and small rivers, which warmed up in summer. But thanks to human help, by today they can be found almost everywhere, even in places that do not suit them.
Their presence can be recognized by the airbubbles that are released by them as they seek food on the bottom disturbing the mud or silt, and by the sudden movement of the reed. They mostly prefer the slow moving, silty waters, that warm up during the summer. If possible, they choose areas with dense vegetation, as it provides food, shelter and a safe breeding place to them.


Their oxigen requirement is quite low, they use the resources of the water very effectively.

If the oxigen level of the water drops below their requirements, they switch to a secondary way of geting what they need, they come to the surface and gulp air there, or in some cases they can even breathe through their skin.
Carp are omnivorous. Their natural food are larvae, mollusc and other small residents of the waterbed.
Larger fish are known to eat small fish as well, but not in an mount that would make them predators.
They pick up their food with their flexible mouth and grind it with their pharynx teeth.
The carp breed when the water reaches a temperature of 18-20 celsius, and if they find places they consider safe. This mostly happens in may and june, although depending the weather, this can last untill the middle of july.
