Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

These fish originate from china, but they can be found in the warmer rivers and lakes of eastern Russia. In Hungary they first appeared in 1973, when officials decided to introduce a new kind of fish to reduce the overgrown vegetation of the rivers and lakes. The grass carp can reach a size of 1 meter and a weight of 30-40 kg’s.

Grass carp can be found in almost all rivers and larger lakes of Hungary. It likes the areas that have a lot of seaweed.
The body of the grass carp is shaped like a torpedo and covered by large, silvery scales. The ones living near the Baikal Lake are black, and are called black grass carp accordingly. It boasts a massive head, with a strong and fleshy mouth.


Its menu is mostly made up of plants, it likes fresh offshoots, eats green algae and reed.
Their breeding season is in june, at a water temperature of about 20 celsius. Their eggs float up to the warmer regions of the water. The younglings start their life with feeding on planktons, and switch to more solid food as they grow.
